What is the best freeze protection option for your outdoor water faucet?
When I purchased my new house it came with an outdoor faucet. Since the temperatures where I live during the winter can and do get below freezing. This past year it reached -22 degrees Fahrenheit. With these types of temperatures in mind, I didn’t want my outdoor faucet to freeze. So what were my options? When I started my research there were two styles. The one style that insulates over the faucet like the Rocky Mountain Goods Faucet cover for winter protection. The other style is a screw in type like the Blue Penguin Freeze Miser.
Rocky Mountain Goods Faucet Cover for Winter Freeze Protection
Made with a heavy duty plastic shell the faucet protector has better insulation then other covers and is guaranteed to last for years. Install your faucet cover in seconds: 1. Loop around faucet handle 2. Pull cord away from house 3. Slide lock to hold firmly. The padded seal designs keeps your faucet better protected while also keeping away scuffs on your house. Rocky Mountain Goods Faucet Cover comes with a 3 year guarantee. The cover can also be painted to match your house. Is this the best freeze protection for your outdoor faucet?
Freeze Miser Outdoor Faucet Freeze Protection
While the usual winter faucet covers, fabric faucet socks, and the manual drip method can protect an outdoor faucet IF temperatures don’t drop too low, they often don’t provide enough protection to prevent pipes and faucets from freezing. Blue Penguin’s Freeze Miser PREVENTS FREEZING FROM EVER HAPPENING, no matter how cold the temperatures or for how long – made of sturdy BRASS, STAINLESS STEEL and COLD IMPACT RESISTANT POLYPROPYLENE.
BUT HOW DOES IT WORK? Unlike the manual drip method that requires a constant rate of water dripping, the engineering of the Freeze Miser releases only the minimal amount of water to prevent your faucet from freezing. Its patented design allows it to sense the internal water temperature, allowing no water to drip until the water temperature drops below 37°F/3°C…and that means best freeze protection using the least amount of water.
Faucet protection in just 2 simple steps: Hand-tighten the Freeze Miser on your exterior faucet. Open faucet all the way to ensure that water pressure is available to the Freeze Miser (Minimum 10 PSI). And that’s it – your faucet is protected from freezing!
They stand behind the quality of your Freeze Miser with a 2-year limited warranty. Warrantied against all defects in materials or craftsmanship – The Freeze Miser is proudly engineered, developed, tested, manufactured, and packaged RIGHT HERE IN THE USA!
Is the Freeze Miser the best freeze protection for you?
So what did I pick to be the best freeze protection for my family?
For me it was not a difficult choice. I picked the Blue Penguin Freeze Miser with the two way valve as the best freeze protection for my family. We have chickens and having the Freeze miser with Y valve allowed me to fill the water bucket for the chickens all winter long outside. If I had purchased the Rocky Mountain Goods I would have had to remove it each time. The Rocky Mountain Goods item does have a longer warranty with three years to the two of the Freeze Miser.
The Freeze Miser is designed, engineered and made in the USA. The Freeze Miser goes for 21.95 without the Y and with the Y goes for 38.95 while the Rocky Mountain goes for 10.95. So from a price standpoint the Rocky Mountain would get the nod, but from a convenience standpoint the Freeze Miser with the Y was the best freeze protection for our needs!
